I went to see Black Joe Lewis with a couple of friends last week and had a blast. While we all agreed Black Joe was fun, it was the opener, Burnside & Malcolm, that stole the show with their old school southern blues. “Heavy Rhyme Experience: Vol. 1,” was one of the earliest (and still best) examples of how a rapper could play with a live band behind him. I listened to this record a ton in the early 90’s and 17+ years later, I’m still wondering what happened to Vol. 2.

Tom Petty’s “Live Anthology” won’t be released for a few days, but anyone who bought a “ticket” to his Superhighway Tour now has access to half of the 48 tracks that are on the multi-disc album — Petty’s been releasing them one at a time over the past 8 weeks and the rest will be available on the 23rd. It’s an amazing mix of covers and originals recorded between 1978-2007. Everything I’ve heard so far is incredible, including this version of Oh Well, recorded at Bonnaroo in ‘06. Can’t wait to hear the rest.

Jeff Beck - Cause We’ve Ended As Lovers

I knew that Stevie Wonder wrote this tune for Beck, but only recently learned that it was given to him as a replacement for Superstition, which Stevie initially intended to give Beck as a thank you for his help on Talking Book, but ended up liking so much that he recorded it himself instead. Anyway, while not nearly as popular (or funky), this is a really beautiful song.
